Lancaster Craftsmen Builders Continues Pursuit of High Efficiency Homes
In 2005, Mark Lancaster, owner of Lancaster Craftsmen Builders in Middletown, began constructing all of his homes with 2” x 6” framing, a move designed to increase the energy efficiency of the homes he builds. In 2006 he started installing geo-thermal heating and cooling systems into his homes, including his own office building. Now, on the heels of those two moves, in 2007 he has just returned from Chicago, where he attended a 2-day seminar entitled: Green Building for Building Professionals, conducted by the National Association of Home Builders.
Green building incorporates environmental considerations and resource efficiency into every step of the land development and home building process to minimize the environmental impact. Lancaster says the reason he went is to learn about other ways he can incorporate new technology and design into his new homes and to improve the efficiency of the older homes that he remodels. “The goal is to build the best, most sustainable, and practical home for our customers and the environment.”
“There really are significant improvements that can be added to make our homes much less energy-dependent” says Lancaster. “I’m already investigating the products and methods suggested in the class,” adding “that while most folks think improvements may be cost prohibitive or perhaps not worth the investment, I would encourage them to reconsider those notions. Building “green” is not just about improving our environment - it also has real world implications, for the better, for your own wallet.”
In March 2008 Lancaster will attend another course as part of being accredited as a Certified Green Builder. Lancaster Craftsmen Builders has been building custom homes and remodeling existing homes in Frederick County for nearly 30 years.
